Boys Varsity Football vs. Coleman HS School

Game Date
Sep 15, 2017
Score
: 50
COLEMAN HIGH SCHOOL: 30

Noah Lopez proved to the Coleman Comets there is more than one running threat on Carson City-Crystal’s football team Friday.

Opponents facing the Eagles usually target junior running back Drew Stout as the main threat for the blue and yellow, but Lopez, also a junior, did the most damage against the Comets, rumbling for 140 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a 50-30 win.

“Noah has been a football player in the past. He took a year off last year, but he has played with these group of boys down at the younger levels and we knew adding him this year was going to be a nice piece to our team,” said head coach Tim Stout, who is in his first year at the position. “I’ve been waiting for Noah to have a game like that since he’s came back because he was a nice threat for us back in the middle school and JV days.”

Lopez, who earned his first 100-yard rushing game of his varsity career, knew good things were going to happen to him on game day.

“I felt good. I came in today feeling good at school, knew we were going to have a tough game, but I felt good, I played good, and overall it was a good game,” he said. “Getting 100 yards, it was great. It was a good game, but it’s only going to get better.”

Stout was still a threat, as well, finishing with 196 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns and an interception.

The first half had as many as six turnovers combined from the two teams, however, the Eagles (2-2 overall) finally put together a clean offensive drive in the second quarter after a Comets punt went to the Eagles’ 48-yard line.

Both Stout and Lopez took turns gaining yards on the ground until the Eagles were first and goal at the 1-yard line, when Lopez leaped into the end zone to put the Eagles up 8-0 (two-point play was good) with 4:01 to go in the half.

CC-C forced Coleman to punt on its next possession and promptly took the ball to the end zone again, with Lopez scoring again with two minutes to go (point-after kick good), which gave the Eagles a 15-0 lead.

On the Comets’ next offensive possession, Stout intercepted a pass and ran it to the 25-yard line, which set up his 9-yard touchdown run 14 seconds later (PAT good), which established a solid 22-0 lead for the Eagles.

The Comets (2-2) finally got on the board just before halftime, getting a 35-yard touchdown pass completed with just 23 seconds left.

Stout put the game pretty much out of reach on the first play of the second half, scampering 51 yards for a touchdown (PAT good), giving the Eagles a 29-8 lead.

Teammate Bretten Stanley, a senior running back, joined in on the ground game scoring, getting back-to-back touchdowns of 40- and 28 yards, respectively, which gave the Eagles a 43-12 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Hugh Maclaren, yet another running back for the Eagles, capped off the Eagles’ scoring with a 55-yard touchdown run with 11 minutes to go, which started a running clock for the game.

The Eagles, who finished with 534 total rushing yards against Coleman, have shaken off its 0-2 start and are now on a winning streak with much confidence going ahead, Stout said.

“The confidence it builds for our kids after watching film, after going 0-2, we led those games in the fourth quarter and weren’t able to finish and just seeing on film the little things we talk about and doing the right thing and taking care of our responsibilities, that’s the biggest thing,” Stout said. “Even with an 0-2 start, the kids are playing with a great attitude. They’re real coachable kids. It’s great to see those guys have that kind of success.”

Stanley finished with 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.

Junior linebacker Caleb Collins led CC-C’s defense with nine tackles, followed by Stanley, who had eight. Zakary Norton also had an interception, as well.

The Eagles will be home again next Friday for Homecoming and will face Ashley.
